Mainland Europe has a wealth of megalithic sites. Unlike the British Isles, stone circles are relatively rare though not unknown, conversely, there are far more dolmens and rows of stones/alignments . The alignments of Carnac are renowned world-wide, and prehistoric megalithic construction in France seems a little bit older than in the Birtish Isles (Burl indicates [41] about 3300BC for the Carnac alignments, predating megalithic construction at Stonehenge by 500-800 years) Le Mans cathedral holds an unusual prehistoric stone, remnant of a lagrer site on the outcrop which the old town was built on.
