Strichen Stone Circle, Aberdeenshire
Strichen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Stone Circle, NJ936545

This circle had a troubled history. In 1773 Dr Samuel Johnson was distinctly underimpressed with it "some stones yet standing of a druidical circle, and what I begin to think more worthy of notice some forest trees of full growth" A teneat farmer cleared the stones, only to have to replace them on orders of the outraged landowner, but the reconstruction was slapdash and not true to the original form. The circle suffered durther depredations in the 1960s. In 1978 Strichen council set oout to restore the site, and after a scientfic excavation thew stones were restored truer to the original design. Strichen is a breezy site about 5 mins walk from the road.
